We are pleased to offer this aptly named forerunner intended to get everyone in the right mood to tackle our annual autumn Charter Train.
Prague is a fascinating city for the transport enthusiast, with extensive tram and metro systems and a busy and varied rail scene where the locomotives and units of many operators can be seen. Since our last visit to the capital, with the ‘Grumpy Bohemian’ Railtour in 2024, Arriva continue to expand operations across the Country, as have Regiojet, with a growing fleet of TRAXX and Vectron locomotives. CD have also invested heavily in Vectron’s and a small ex Austrian Taurus fleet all of which can be seen operating through Praha Hlavni Nadrazi. As expected the tour covers all the major CD rail depots, as many tram depots as permitted. We will also visit at least one of the Metro depots, that are home to a small but elusive fleet of shunters. It is intended the tour will operate by bus from our hotel on at least one of the days, providing door-to-door service, ensuring we can maximise time and provide plenty of free time as well. Unfortunately, such arrangements cannot be made so far in advance, and we must wait until at least the Spring to deal with that. Cheap public transport travel cards will enable you to travel the
tram and metro lines, whilst Praha Liben is a good location for passenger and freight, and the busy Hlavni Nadrazi and Masarykovo stations remain the focal point for passenger trains into the city. Please note that because three days of the tour are optional, neither the cost of local transportation nor the rail journey to Usti and Decin has been included in your fare. However, the local tickets covering bus, tram and metro, are excellent value. On Saturday, Day 4, we travel by hired bus, the cost of which has been included in your fare.

Remember- do not book your flight or travel arrangements until we have confirmed the tour as running.

What's not included?
  • Hotel Single Room Supplement - £135 (Optional)
  • Does not include travel to and from Prague
  • Does not include local travel tickets, or rail tickets on Day 3
Itinerary

Day One

Arrival day. There are no planned activities but there will be no shortage of interest, with an abundance of tram lines and the busy stations to keep everyone occupied. Our hotel throughout this tour is Hotel Charles Central, two tram stops and one Metro Station from the Hlavni Nadrazi.

Day Two

After breakfast and a short welcome meeting. we begin the tour with two options. We spend the first full day focusing on the tram and Metro systems travelling by bus, tram, metro, or a combination of all three. It is likely that we will be offered just one of the Metro depots, namely Kacerov, Hostivar, or Zlicin. If that be the case we will opt for Zlicin, because Class 797 shunter No.797.806-7, required by so many of our members, is allocated there. Turning our attention to the Trams we will select from Hostivar Workshops and Depot, Strasnice , Zizkov, Hloubetin, Pankrac, Kobylisy, Motol, Vokovice, and finally the Stresovice Museum and Depot. Those whose interest does not extend to the local transport are at liberty to enjoy a FREE DAY satisfying personal agendas.

Day Three

Another day with options. Firstly, for those with little interest in the Trams and Metros, we offer a prolific ‘awayday’ in the West to enjoy visits to the depots at Usti nad Labem and Decin. Only two depots, but very interesting ones, plus endless passing traffic of varied ownership. Please note that your rail fare today is not included in your tour fare. Those who prefer the local transport are invited to join the second group for a second day that will include depots but also busy City Hotspots.

Day Four

Our final full day sees us back in familiar territory with visits to rail depots. Our first visit will be the prolific Vrsovice Locomotive Depot, followed by a short journey to Praha Odstavne Nadrazi Jih (ONJ) Depot, the main Unit depot and stock servicing facility for Prague. We will then make a visit to Arriva Trains Malesice Depot before finishing off at Praha Liben Depot. Our return journey to the hotel will be via Liben station to drop off those wanting to spend some time freight watching.

Day Five

Today is dispersal day except for those participating in the Railtour. Please note: If you are participating on the Railtour there are regular trains to Brno, and you have the choice of travelling solo or travelling as part of a cheaper Group Ticket which STARS can arrange. If you would prefer to be part of a group ticket, please indicate when booking.
