The Northern Germany Tour
£685.97
Germany
May 29, 2026
June 04, 2026Just over two years or so ago we ran a very successful tour to Northern Germany. With the benefit of hindsight, most of that tour will be repeated this time. On the last occasion we were greatly assisted by a detailed map drawn up by John Teasdale following his own previous visits and experiences. However, such are the complexities of the Docks and frequent road reversal priorities, the map was not the be all and end all. Fortunately, that’s where Mike Godfrey came into his own with the aid of GPS as he ‘homed us in on our essential ‘targets.’ This combined effort resulted in the discovery of 81 locomotives. That, combined with the earlier rush hour at the Hbf, the 90 locomotives we would later see at Machen, and concluded at Hamburg-Harburg, made for arguably the most successful day of the tour.
Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, and the land to the north will never disappoint and an exceptionally large number can be expected. Boredom will certainly not be a problem. Come with us and enjoy.
There are good air connections from the UK to both Hamburg and Bremen, the latter of which is served by many low-cost airlines.
Remember- do not book your flight or travel arrangements until we have confirmed the tour as running.
What's not included?
- Hotel Single Room Supplement - £210.00 (Optional)
- Does not include travel to and from Germany, nor Rail tickets for the Langeoog option
Itinerary
Day One
Arrival day and once checked into our hotel which is situated at Bremen Hbf., you are Free to follow your own agenda. With the railway station behind you and the Tram station in front, will you know which way to turn? Don’t worry there is a spot where you can monitor both. All you need is binoculars and directions from a STARS officer. The InterCity hotel Bremen is our ‘base’ for the next two nights.
Day Two
This will be a free day with an optional proposal. In our history, the Island of Langeoog has been visited before, now there is another opportunity. It has an interesting narrow gauge line that connects with the ferry. There are seven locos listed as being on the island. Travel to and from Bremen is by rail and ferry. For those who opt for this visit, the cost is Not Included in the main tour.
Day Three
We move on today in the comfort of a locally sourced coach that we will use for the next four days. However, not before we have cleared up some local attractions. We take either a view or visit to the Carriage sidings, before moving on to the RBF with its stabling point (the former Bw.Bremen 4). Continuing to Bremerhaven Docks. There are three large yards where we should pick up a good selection of DB and private locos. Next is Bw. Bremerhaven, now just a stabling point and small workshop, but good for anything up to a dozen locomotives. Finally we arrive at Bremervorde for the EVB depot, and the hydrogen trains, that will finish visits for the day. We continue into Hamburg and our usual hotel, the Furst Bismarck, conveniently opposite Hamburg Hbf. It’s an ideal ‘base’ that allows a visit there at will, especially at ‘rush hour.’
Day Four
Leaving Hamburg it’s off to Itzehoe where Metrom locos stable, followed by Niebull (for the Sylt Shuttle), the Hbf., and Depot, and an opportunity to see those Class 245’s that are normally confined to the car shuttles. On then to Bw. Kiel followed by a view the Vossloh works. We retire for the night at the InterCity Hotel that is part of Kiel Hbf.
Day Five
Today we return to Hamburg but, on route we call at the Rail Museum at Neumunster located to the north of the station and opposite the carriage works. From here we travel to Maschen yard, a must for anyone visiting Hamburg. We conclude with freight watching at Harburg station. Then it’s back to the Furst Bismarck hotel for our final two nights.
Day Six
“Leave the best till last,” so goes the old cliché, but how do you possibly ‘rank’ Mashen, Hamburg-Harburg, and todays location, Hamburg Docks? The latter is an experience you can never get enough of as the locos will change considerably. The days itinerary will end at Hamburg-Harburg Bhf or Hamburg Hbf as you wish.
Day Seven
Dispersal day. Can you manage another morning rush hour before you go?
